Can you build muscle with calisthenics?

It’s a common question that is hotly debated. The issue, here, being that bodyweight exercises are less effective at targeting precise muscle groups and are inherently limited in terms of the amount of resistance they can offer.

It’s true: you can’t build a Ronnie Coleman physique with just bodyweight training. BUT bodybuilding isn’t always about becoming a mass monster. And you can sculpt a very impressive physique with a surprising amount of precision and balance using just calisthenics.

To build muscle with calisthenics, you should focus on metabolic build up and reaching failure. You should select the exercises that DO more-or-less focus on a select few muscles. You should choose safe, closed-chain movements, that aren’t too skill-dependent. And you can incorporate techniques like drop sets and pre-fatigue for added benefits.

Bodyweight bodybuilding has a lot of benefits. And the best way to build muscle with bodyweight is, of course, to combine that training with other modalities!
