Dr. Saya from www.DefyMedical.com speaks about the difference between using testosterone for bodybuilding versus for replacement therapy. Transcript: The question or the issue of bodybuilding and testosterone and “steroids” comes up a lot, and the reasons for that coming up a lot are a lot of patients, either new patients or existing patients have had some exposure to those things in the past. Maybe they’ve done it on their own, non-medically supervised in college or high school or for various reasons they’ve used some of those things and now obviously when they come to a clinic, and they’re looking for medically supervised testosterone replacement, those things come to mind, and they question us about those and they ask about those. It’s a very long discussion usually with patients when they do ask about those things. The way the discussion usually goes is that our goals are completely different than those goals for the bodybuilders and those types.
The testosterone that we use, testosterone cypionate, we dose it to optimize your levels within the normal range. So there are different ranges for different labs. The primary lab we use is LabCorp. Their “reference range” or normal range for testosterone is approximately 350 to approximately 1,200. It’s a huge range, and that’s what’s considered the normal range. We like our patients to be normal, but we want you to be at the best end of normal you can be. We want you to be at the upper end of that range. If you’re going to be treated, why not treat it right? Be at the best end of the range while still being normal. That’s typically where you’ll get the best results while still being what we call physiologic for your body, still in normal testosterone levels.
What some of the bodybuilders and those folks come in asking about is getting their levels what we call super-physiologic, which means above what’s considered normal for your body. First of all, I want to make clear that those aren’t our goals for our treatments. That’s not what we do. We don’t condone that. Our goals are not to get your levels as high as we can and to see what happens. Often, more is less in that regard. When you start getting too high, you start shutting things down. You run into side effects. You run into problems, and those aren’t things that we want to deal with, and it’s not good for your body or your health. We shoot to get you at that goal range.
The goal range where most guys will get most of the benefits they’re looking for. Most guys are looking for; they want to feel the way they did when they were younger. They want more energy. They want to have some of that sex drive back that they lose when their testosterone levels fall. They want to work out and be able to actually see results, not necessarily turn into Mr. Universe, but they want to put on some lean muscle. They want to be able to keep the fat off. They don’t want to have high blood pressure. They want to lose some weight and get their cholesterol levels down. Those things are things that are attainable at our levels, the healthy things. But
